Centre is spending crores of rupees on welfare schemes in TN : Minister M R K Pannerselvam

Bhuvanagiri August 27, 2006

"The Central Government is spending thousands of crores of rupees in Tamil Nadu under various welfare schemes to benefit  the people. But the people are not aware of these schemes" said Shri M R K Pannerselvam Minister for Backward Classes Govt. of Tamil Nadu while inaugurating a five day Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign at Bhuvanagiri Cuddalore district today.

The people were lacking in awareness about the central schemes because the previous government in the state took all the credit while implementing those schemes. It created an image among the people that all schemes were its own creations. The previous state government did not extend its cooperation for conducting  information campaigns. After the new government took over in Tamil Nadu things have changed. Many schemes including National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and Bharat Nirman Scheme are being implemented in the state with full cooperation from the state government, he said.

The Minister said that the women's self help groups were first started in Tamil Nadu during 1989 and now it has grown very well. The government has allotted Rs.38 crores for the creation of a revolving fund for the self help groups, he added.

Shri Pannerselvam said that Rs.58 crores has been allotted for implementing the NREGS in Cuddalore district during 2006-07 and out of which Rs.5 crores has already been spent.

He appreciated the way in which the public information campaign in Bhuvanagiri is being conducted and asked the people to make use of this opportunity to know all about government schemes.

District Collector Shri Gagandeep Singh Bedi in his presidential address said that 41 out of 73 stalls in the exhibition have been put up by various departments of the state government. Intensive campaign through cultural and film programmes are being conducted during the five days of the campaign in 30 villages of the district, he added.
